Since July 2024, we have been partnering with the T1DRA study and the University of Bristol to offer you the opportunity to learn more about your health.
Through filling in a questionnaire and a simple finger prick test, you can take part in this study and find out if you could be at increased risk of developing type 1 diabetes!
About the Study
The T1DRA study aims to find out how many adults in the UK are at increased risk of developing type 1 diabetes!
Around 400,000 people in the UK are affected by type 1 diabetes and more than half of these cases are diagnosed in adults. T1DRA aims to understand more about immune changes before symptoms appear.
By completing a finger prick blood test at home, it will be possible to determine if you have markers of increased risk of type 1 diabetes.

What Can I Gain from Taking Part?
“Approximately 10% of adults newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in the UK are admitted to the hospital with life-threatening diabetic ketoacidosis,” explains Kathleen Gillespie, Professor of Molecular Medicine and PI of the T1DRA study.
It’s important that diabetes is diagnosed and treated as early as possible. If left untreated, type-1 diabetes is a life-threatening condition. This study gives the opportunity for early detection.
By taking part, you will:
- Have the opportunity to learn more about your health.
- Be monitored and given information about what symptoms to look out for to prevent you from becoming seriously unwell.
- Receive information on any new clinical trials or treatments that may delay or prevent the condition from developing.
“We hope that providing islet autoantibody results and guidance about future risks will help prevent symptoms from being overlooked. We hope that knowing the risk of type 1 diabetes will prevent the emergency and/or delay the diagnosis,” continues Kathleen.
Contributions from BRP members
Since our partnership with the T1DRA project began in July 2024, over 1,000 BRP members have filled in the questionnaire and expressed interest in this project, contributing to 38% of the total recruitments since then!
“So far we have had a fantastic response from members of the public”, shares Kathleen.
The British Research Panel has significantly boosted our recruitment with motivated and proactive participants. You are doing a great job spreading the word about the importance of participating in research.
We want to thank our BRP members for their interest and contributions in this project and we want to encourage more of you to get involved! Your engagement enables research to progress!

“Through our partnerships, we aim to offer our members various opportunities to participate in research. This study has multiple benefits: many of our members are eligible to participate, they can participate from home, and they have the opportunity to learn more about their health status and potential risks,” says Silvia, Head of Partnerships.
