A new clinical trial found that an 8-week mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) program was just as effective as the antidepressant escitalopram in easing anxiety symptoms.
The study included adults with various anxiety disorders, such as generalised anxiety, panic disorder, and social anxiety.
Participants in the mindfulness group attended weekly classes, practiced meditation and gentle movement, and followed daily exercises at home. Both groups experienced about a 30% reduction in anxiety, but those in the mindfulness group reported fewer side effects compared to the medication group.
The findings suggest mindfulness could be a valuable treatment option, especially for people who prefer a non-drug approach.
